Who knew cleansing your colon could cause so much joy? I am not a doctor and am writing this post to share my joyful journey with colon hydrotherapy, aka colonics, for over 20 years. I originally was introduced to an amazing Massage Therapist & Colon Hydrotherapist, Kim Smith, while attending a yoga class. I had started on a journey of discovering ways to detox my body and was fascinated by what still came out. At that time I was doing the Master Cleanse along with other yogis and could not believe that my body was still getting rid of stuff, even after days of semi fasting. I began to dig deeper on the subject and am fascinated by our bodies ability to cleanse and heal itself. Over the past 20 years I have had over 50 colon therapy sessions and I can tell you I find great joy in them!
What Doctor's Say
I have asked medical practitioners about their thoughts on colonics and have found they are not fans. They feel they can disrupt the good bacteria in our colons and can do more harm than good, but I have not found that to be the case. They are trained to diagnose and prescribe, leaving us with a labeled illness and a cabinet full of medicines. I believe there is a place and time for traditional medicine, but it is up to us to work on the preventative side. At the age of 49 it was time for my colonoscopy. I had done a series two weeks prior to my scheduled colonoscopy so the dreaded colon prep for me was not the horror story I had been told. My procedure was quick and easy and my gastroenterologist said, " You have a pretty colon." That was music to my ears and a confirmation of how they made me feel was how they made me look inside! Clean and joyful!
The Process
A series of five sessions, over a two week span is what is recommended. by my colon hydrotherapist. Each session lasts about one hour. The process is quite simple and pain free. I always use the restroom prior, removing all bottom undergarments, and then again after to expel anything left before driving.
You lay on a massage like table on your

back during the colonic. You may be instructed to roll on your side for the tube to initially be inserted. The key is to breathe and relax. When we tense up our sphincter muscles in our butt tense and that makes it more difficult for the tube to be inserted. It does not hurt, but if you are fighting it as opposed to relaxing into it, the process is more of a challenge. Once the tube is in you roll back over to your back and the fun begins! Water goes in to your colon, hydrating and helping what is in there to come out. I always find it fascinating to see what comes out. Gross I know, but it is a reality check and wake up call! Use the time on the table wisely and a way to discover new habits and a more joyful you! My colon hydrotherapist and mentor, Kim is full of knowledge and educated me on how our bodies process the foods we eat. Learning to focus on foods my colon likes and not ones that clog it.
Lose Weight and Feel Great
We can store pounds of poop in our colon, making us feel tired and bloated. Especially if we are eating foods that clog our colons as opposed to cleanse them. Food is suppose to go in and come out in a timely manner. My own family member and friends have shared challenges in going once a week. That is not good and is becoming the new normal. No one wants to talk about it, but it can make us very sick and keep us from losing weight. Especially when doing a juice cleanse the amount that gets unstuck and removed is unbelievable. Sometimes in the beginning, not much comes out during the session, but does after or later.
Cleanse Your Colon
During a series I try to drink mostly green juice that I prepare, raw veggies, smoothies and nuts. I avoid alcohols, dairy, meat, processed foods and anything that does not move quickly through the colon. In the initial days I was taught to add more raw veggies into my diet. I never imagined a salad being a meal. As a child I grew up with canned vegetables and a loaf of bread on the table. Hydration is key too! We often don't drink enough water and I find that increasing my water intake during a session is key. I also try different things like a massage, lymphatic drainage, vibration plate, and glutathione IV drip during the timeframe that I have a series scheduled. The more toxins you can break up in you're body the better because the colonic will help your body remove what has been broken up.
Emotional Roller Coaster
Expect to have many highs and lows if you schedule a series. I let friends, family and co workers know that I am doing a cleanse and may be a little off. There will be waves of highs with lots of energy, feeling lighter and happier. Then all of a sudden you will hit a low, feeling snappy, tired, sluggish, and foggy. The lows win in the beginning, but the highs take over in the end and are worth it. The more cravings the more your body is having to overcome. We often think of addiction being related to drugs, not realizing that almost every chemical we put into our bodies on a regular basis can become habit forming. Our bodies become so addicted to sugar, caffeine, meat, dairy, alcohol, nicotine, and illicit drugs. When we stop there is a withdrawal process our bodies get rid of and colonics help push those toxins out faster.
I have become very emotional on the table before, as it is breaking up stored toxins in the gut. You may feel sick after or like you are catching a cold. Your skin may break out. The toxins have to come out somewhere and your skin is your biggest organ. If you keep going, and push through the withdrawals, by the end of the fifth one you will not only have lost weight, but will feel like a new, more joyful person. Colonics are not for everyone. I have found great growth and joy in my journey with them and maybe you will too.
TIP: CHEW 'TIL YOU CAN'T CHEW NO MORE!
Chew your food and your juice, my colon hydrotherapist would say. In one of my beginning sessions she asked me if I had eaten mushrooms recently. I started to say no, but then said I had on pizza two days prior. I was in disbelief that it was still in there. She saw it come through the tube. I mean how could she make that up? It had probably gotten stuck she explained. I now know better and if doing a series would not advise eating pizza two days prior.
